I know many of you think I've 'got this'. Right?
I mean, I'm in maintenance. I made goal in July 2013 and I can quote chapter and verse of the program...what to eat, why, when, etc. And I'm a Coach, for pete's sakes.
But I have to tell you.....NO I do NOT know everything...
and ..the lessons NEVER end.
They really don't.
Once you reach Maintenance, you realize, more than ever, that our biggest enemies:
- are NOT 'sludge' foods,
- are not holidays
- are not parties
- are not weekends
- are not being bored or unhappy or depressed or stressed or any number of a bunch of unwelcome emotions
- are not food pushers or well-meaning (and sometimes NOT so well meaning) friends and family members
- are not the meals we don't like or the calculations you have to do or the time it takes to plan and prepare and log your meals
- is not even the scale!
No, the biggest enemy? Is OURSELVES. It's what goes on in our HEADS.
What we TELL ourselves. (or DON'T tell ourselves). What we BELIEVE about ourselves. (or don't believe). Our confidence level. Our 'shame' and/or 'guilt' (BOTH are totally wasted, USELESS emotions in my opinion).
And the way to handle ourselves? That's the hardest part. Because it involves stepping OUT of our heads. And the only way to do that?
Is to ASK.FOR.HELP.
And OH boy is this hard, right?
Because after all, our PRIDE gets in the way!
We don't want to admit we need help.
Oh NO.
We've 'got this'.
We can do this, right?
We're adults, after all. We don't 'need' anybody.
BULLSHIT.
EVERYONE needs help sometimes. EVERYONE needs to admit "I screwed up". EVERYONE needs to ask for suggestions.....and I think the best blogs, the people with the biggest chances for success, are those from people who ask for help and then TAKE the advice in the spirit it's meant instead of getting all 'huffy' about it. (let's face it, sometimes we do, don't we? LOL).....
I can't tell you how often someone has said to me 'I need help'....only to back off later and swear they are 'OK'. And to leave them alone.
Heck, I've done it MYSELF! I'm not happy about it but I've done it. Been ashamed to admit that I'm struggling....been positive I could handle it 'myself' when I couldn't.
Here's a suggestion if you need/want help...and if you're afraid to ask for a Coach or to tell your existing Coach you're struggling...and don't want to blog about it.
PRAY!
Why not? If you believe in a higher power, what can it HURT? Right?
I've done it...and I've gotta say, some of my best insights have come AFTER I sat down and wrote HELP on a piece of paper, and just poured my heart out to God....no one else...and said "I can't do this on my own".
Because I KNEW I couldn't. It's hard to change a lifetime of bad habits. Very very hard.
And there are times I get so messed up inside my own head, my own logic (or illogic, depending on how you look at it) that I NEED the help of my higher power. Whatever he/she can suggest! And usually the suggestions are pretty simple.
Things like:
"SLOW DOWN"
"STOP WORRYING".
"PLAN YOUR DAY".
"STOP THINKING YOU'RE SUFFERING ... YOU'RE NOT SUFFERING!"
"WHEN YOU STAY OP YOU TREAT YOURSELF RIGHT".
"SLOW DOWN THE EXERCISE, for pete's sakes"
"LOVE YOURSELF.....EVEN IF the scale went UP!" (how enlightening is THIS?)
"TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE...THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT HERE"
"THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU LEARN ARE FROM YOUR MISTAKES"
...and much, much more.
The next time you're struggling, think about it. Just cast aside your doubts and take a deep breath and ask for help. You may be surprised at what happens. MIRACLES can and do happen....right here on Earth, every single day. We just don't see them all the time. We don't necessarily here about them.
The first time I did a sit-up in the gym it was a MIRACLE. A quiet, private, unheralded MIRACLE.
The day I stepped on the scale and saw I made goal weight was a MIRACLE. Again, it was a quiet victory...a huge victory but it was quiet and private. I was all alone, there was no fanfare...just me with a huge SMILE on my face. I remember I looked in the mirror, into my own eyes, and said "YOU DID IT!"
NEVER DOUBT your ability to work MIRACLES In your own life, because you can. You are stronger than you know...IF you enlist the help of One who is ALL powerful.
After all, we're just human beings, right? We make mistakes. LOTS of mistakes.
But HE knows all....sees all...and He LOVES YOU.
HE WILL NOT IGNORE YOUR CRIES FOR HELP if you are sincere about them.
Just some things to think about this Sunday evening. I know I will continue to rely on Him...because I know that I cannot do this alone. PERIOD.
Keep on!
